Sodepur flyover to shut every weekend from July 19 for urgent structural repairs
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has strongly objected to the placement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photo next to an image of Goddess Kali at a BJP event in West Bengal. The incident occurred during the felicitation ceremony of newly appointed state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya. Ghosh has alleged that the act was disrespectful to religious sentiments and an example of political misuse of faith.
In a post on X, Ghosh wrote, “Blinded by the urge to glorify one man, BJP has done something unimaginable—placed Modi’s image beside Goddess Kali. This is not just sycophancy; this is a desecration of faith.” He further stated, “Modiji is a democratically elected head of a secular, constitutional democracy—not a deity to be worshipped.” Ghosh described the act as “an insult to religion” and said it mocked the traditions and beliefs of the people.
According to Ghosh, BJP’s decision to display Modi’s image beside a deity reflects a deliberate attempt to equate a political figure with a religious symbol. He said, “They chant about ‘Hindu pride’ but use our deities as propaganda tools.” The Trinamool Congress has maintained that such actions amount to using religion for electoral benefit, especially ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
There has been no official statement from BJP regarding the controversy. However, a party source said the image of Modi was placed as a gesture of respect toward the party leadership and not intended to hurt religious sentiments. The issue has triggered widespread discussion, with responses emerging from various sections of the public across platforms.
